How to Serve your Wine after a Hearty Thanksgiving Meal


When you serve a great thanksgiving meal, one thing that will definitely make it better is serving a good wine. Because you do not know what your guests will prefer, it is best to provide both white and red wine. That way, your guests will take their pick and even mix it up later into the night. However, it is paramount that you know how to present the best wine so that your guests enjoy it. The most important fact to consider is the temperature at which your wine should be served. The temperature will have an effect on how your wine tastes. White wine should always be served chilled while red wine is served at room temperature. You can buy a portable wine cellar that has the settings for wines in case your house is too warm and the room temperature is compromised.

It is also important to know what type of glass you should serve each particular wine. Wine glasses should be transparent and plain to ensure that you can see the wine color. You should always serve wine in wine glasses that have a stem so that your guests use the stem to hold the glass without warming the wine. Glasses for red wine have a large bowl and are generally wider to ease swirling. Swirling makes the wine taste better as it is exposed to oxygen. White wine should be served in tulip-shaped glasses, which are slightly smaller than red wine glasses. This ensure that the wine does not warm too quickly. If you’re serving sparkling wine, use small, tall and thin glasses. The elongated glass allows the bubbles to develop properly and keeps the wine chilled.

Once you have picked out the glasses, you need to know how to pour out your wine. Your guests will leave your home very disappointed if they had to rush to the bathroom to clean a wine spill that you caused when you were serving them. It should be done slowly toward the very centre of the glass and only pour up to the widest part of the glass, which is more often just below half. This allows for easy swirling especially for red wines. Once you’re done pouring, tilt the tip of the wine bottle and rotate your hand to avoid dripping.

Once you have served your wine and all your guests have had enough, it is important to learn how to store the leftover wine without its taste being affected. For most wines, the fridge is a great storage for about 5 days. This will not affect the taste of your opened bottle of wine and you can still serve it to other guests as opposed to throwing it out and buying a new bottle. If it is red wine, ensure that you remove it from the fridge a few hours before you serve so that it can achieve its optimum serving temperature. With these great tips on serving and storing your wine, your guests will leave your home happy and impressed and you will be proud of yourself for having served a great meal and offered a great wine in style.
